First Gothic church in Burgundy. Construction began in 1209, completed from 1375 to 1500 with plan and style maintained over the centuries.
What a contrast between the austere façade and the watch tower, reminiscent of the fortress in the film «The Name of theRose » and the bright, majestic interior of this church, oversized for this small village.
From the entrance, the building appears in clarity, purity, elegance and the balance of the new original style characteristic of Burgundian Gothic of the early 13th century, influenced by that of Ile de France.
Our ancestors built a true masterpiece.
ENTRANCE AND CLOISTER
The current church square was the honour courtyard after passing a portcullis gate of the abbey which was fortified in 1362 during the ‘Hundred Years’ War.
Only the abbey church and the « 17th century palace » remain. The other buildings were destroyed in the 18th century.
On the right, the cloister entrance is bricked up above the 18th century fountain of « La Samaritaine » made of cast iron. A model displaying the abbey enclosure in 1656 can be seen at the tourist office.
On the right (DO NOT RING OR DISTURB) the remaining cloister rebuilt in the 18th century can be seen through a grille.
INSIDE THIS CHURCH
Between the two towers : 15th century covered porch decorated with plants, animals and snails,
Nave with four bays and aisles, cross-ribbed vaults on alternating round columns.
Flat-ended choir with 18th century rose window in the style of the 12th, 13th centuries.
Three elegant arcades (arborium, canopy) surround the Virgin who carries the relics of Saint-Seine.
Statues of the Annunciation from the 15th century, school of Claus Sluter.

ABBEY CHURCH
1) The façade and 15th century porch : between the two towers, the porch-terrace with gargoyles has a cross above the coat of arms of Abbot Jean de Blaisy. It is closed above the doors by a tympanum with an acorn frieze and vine decoration hiding a bestiary symbolic of Burgundy : snail, wild boar and wyvern (mentioned by Henri Vincenot, a local writer in The Pope of Snails.) Statues from the 15th century once stood on the pedestals : the Virgin in the centre, Saint Seine and Saint Benedict on the sides.
2) The nave is 51 m long and 27 m large at the crossing, with a height of 20 m under the keystone, featuring a triple nave and a choir with four chapels opening onto the transepts. The six-part vaults rest alternately on strong piers and cylindrical columns. The pillars supporting the main arch are thicker and reinforced by four small columns. The capitals are all different decorated with foliage. The back of the choir is a flat wall with a 1759 rose window in the style of the 13th century. Violet le Duc calls the entire gallery around the nave « the Burgundian passage »
This beautiful gallery passes through the thickness of the arches, with high windows above bringing in plenty of light.
3) The stalls and woodwork : the nave, previously reserved for the faithful was separated from the choir of the monks by a grille and perhaps a 15th century rood screen. The stalls by Guillaume Theiss date from 1750. They are decorated in Louis 15th style with biblical medallions.
4) The choir : the very graceful ciborium or canopy with three arches (former rood screen ?) whose central spire contains a shrine for the relics of the abbey, the enclosures of the chapels and transept are in flamboyant Gothic style. The Virgin and the angel of the Annunciation are polychrome statues. At the left entrance was the tomb of abbot Guillaume de Vienne who became archbishop of Rouen, resembling those of the Dukes of Burgundy by the same Claus SLUTER’s workshop.
5) Northern arm of the transept, original gothic mural paintings from 1504.
The northern enclosure behind the stalls depicts the legendary life of Saint Seine in 22 panels. The legend states that Saint-Seine, riding a donkey, received the territory of the future abbeyfrom his father, the Count of Mesmont. Saint-Seine riding his donkey appeared on the abbey’s seal and on the stones marking the boundaries of his territory.

The HISTORY of the ABBEY of SAINT SEINE in FIVE EPISODES
MIDDLE of the 6th CENTURY : the FOUNDING. FROM SIGO TO SAINT SEINE
534: Sigo, the son of the Count of Mesmont, retired in the forest of Cestres and founded a community of monks there.
The Count gave his son as much land as he could cover on a donkey in one day.
That is illustrated as early as the Middle Ages on the boundary stones around the Land of Saint-Seine and at the beginning of the 16th century on the outer walls of the church cloister.
587: Bishop Gregory of Tours described a miracle in the basilica containing the tomb of Sequanus in the territory of Langres.
Thus, Sigo became Sequanus and replaced the worship of Goddess Sequana at the springs of the river Seine.
8th-13th CENTURIES : UP of the PATRIMONY under the PROTECTION of the PRINCES and the POPE
775: the future Saint Benedict of Aniane, arrived at the abbey. He founded the abbey of Aniane in 782, reformed the Benedictine rule, imposed it on all the monasteries in the Carolingian empire.
From 805 onwards, the emperors confirmed and completed the lands of the monastery in the Langres diocese and so did the popes in 1178 and 1245.
The Land of Saint-Seine was also completed with donations by the Dukes of Burgundy and the local lords in exchange for masses, protections and services.
Twenty churches with their tithes were given by Autun and Langres bishops.
13th BEGINNING of the 16th CENTURY : BUILDING and DESTRUCTION of the CURRENT ABBEY
1209: According to a ducal charter, Duke Eudes III encouraged the building of a new abbey church and protected the builders and their horses.
1255: a fire burnt down half the church and the buildings around.
In 1255 and 1256, papal bulls granted indulgences to all those who would help rebuild the church. But the rebuilding lingered because of financial difficulties.
Alter 1375, the restoration was resumed with Abbots William of Vienna, John of Blaisy in 1398 and Peter of Fontette in 1439, who had the dock tower built.
1504: The paintings in the north enclosure of the choir depicting Saint Seine's life were made and in 1521, those in the south enclosure with Saint Christopher, the Virgin Mary, and a tree of Jesse.
17th-18th CENTURIES : SPLENDOR of the CONTI, STRICTNESS of the MAURISTS.
1636: The Prince of Conti, Armand of Bourbon, was appointed Abbot of Saint-Seine.
1647: He introduced there the reform of Saint Maur, a congregation of monks famous for their erudition.
1715: The bouse and abbot's lodging were rebuilt and a new cloister was created in 1745.
END of the 18th. 20th CENTURIES : DEMOLITION and TRANSFORMATION.
During the Revolution, the buildings were nationalized, then sold: the buyers started demolishing them to reuse the materials.
1812: The chapter room, the abbot's lodging, and a part of the main building had disappeared.
1835: The buildings were struck by lightning. The remaining buildings were then transformed into a thermal station.
1862: The abbey church was classified as a historical monument, and some works were done.
1942: The Sisters of Providence bought the place to create a children's home, which is still in existence.
